What's Happening: 11.2.10

In light of our tech blackout last Friday, this article is pretty interesting. Could you give up your electronic devices for "No-Tech Tuesdays"? Leave a comment on this post. Discuss how easy (or not) it would be for you to give up electronic gadgets one day a week. This is an assignment. It is due no later than 9 pm today.

Today, seniors have a class meeting second period. who will be taking candids from yearbook? Thursday is Club Fair. Who is taking pictures for that? Put your names up on the whiteboard.

Today we will be doing goal setting for the quarter. This is an assignment. You will be putting together a portfolio to show how you have advanced toward your goals.

  1. i think "No-Tech Tuesdays" are going to be hard for our generation because we are so used to using our phones and what not on a daily basis so it might be hard for us. I also think that its a great idea because our generation needs to exercise more often.

Giving up technology for a whole day...Not the easiest thing to do, but very plausible. I personally think it'll take forever for me to give up my MP3, even for a day. For me, giving up technology for a day means a day of silence. For others, it would be exile from their friends. I think it's a good idea, because generations today have become too dependent on their electronics.

  5. Without technology for a day will be hard. But I think we should try it for one day because now a days people rely on technology for everything. We should see how the people in the past lived because they lived perfectly fine without technology.

  6. Technology is something that people use everyday, for many different purposes. It's something that cannot be taken from everyday life nowadays. I myself, use technology everyday, for either entertainment or just to make my life easier. This "No-Tech Tuesdays" is purely unacceptable. It's true that SOME technology is completely optional, and that it enhances one's ability to speak face-to-face, and gives one a reason to think of clever ways to do tasks, but that doesn't mean that we should stop using technology completely, even though it is only for a day.

No, I do not think I'm capable to give up electronics for a day. Using electronics became a daily thing, so it's not the easiest thing to do. I use it from the moment I wake to the second I sleep.

  8. I don't think I can give up electronic devices every Tuesday. Since I am constantly on my phone everyday, that would be very hard for me. I am also on my laptop everyday after school for my homework. That would prevent me from accomplishing my assignments. Also, in this generation, technology grew and became more reliable to everyone in the world.

  9. I think the school deciding to give up electronics for a day is something that should be considered everywhere. It would feel impossible for me to not have my phone for a day, but it would give a different perspective on life without electronics. Since we do rely on our electronics so much it would be interesting living a day with out any.

  10. My psychologist neighbor said that too much technology was diminishing our social skills. I kind of agree. Isn't it annoying to have people texting in the middle of your conversation?

I loooove my electronics and I hate when I can't use them but I have been in some situations where I couldn't use them. When I go on retreats at my church, its really hard. I caught myself constantly reaching for my cellphone, TO BE CONTINUED....

  11. In this world today, it's not unusual for someone's life to revolve around, or depend heavily on, electronics.

It'd be definitely hard, but you can overcome it.
I've gone through this a couple times, where my family and I take vacations (to other countries) which includes vacations from our electronics.

With all honesty, it's REALLY bad for the first couple days, I feel so empty without my blackberry and my iPod, but the point of these family vacations is to relax and "take a break from it all." I guess it's like smokers trying to quit, you have to get over the "three day hump."

  12. Honestly, I could probably go through my classes without using my phone or computer or microwaves but when I get home...i probably wont know what to do with myself. I could read a book I guess. But I do think this would be a fun exercise to try to see if i could do it. It would definitely give me a new perspective on things to see how people did things without electronic devices.

  14. I believe I can succeed in giving up electronics once a week. It'll be difficult because I wouldn't be able to see any Trey Songz videos or hear his music.

  15. I can't give up my electronic devices for a day every week. When I forget my phone I always feel like I'm naked. I always feel around in my pocket even though I know it's not there, and that's only the effect of not having my phone. If I couldn't use electronics I would end up sleeping or reading the whole day away out of boredom. The reading is a maybe since, I use my iTouch to read eBooks.

  16. I would be so depressed at school all day without my phone that's like my mom leaving me to die or something. If HHS gave up technology for a day I wouldn’t be able to eat lunch because there wouldn’t be a microwave. It would be a very interesting experience that I wouldn’t want to participate in, however its possible that I can be persuaded to do so.

  17. I believe that we, as a society have become too dependent, and reliant on technology in our daily lives. I think it would be difficult, as well as beneficial to give up electronics for one day. It would be difficult, because I have become accustom to using technology everyday. It would also be beneficial, because it would allow me to see daily life through natural eyes, and not the eyes provided by technology.

  18. I think that the idea of a "No-Tech Tuesday" is a good idea. But i don't think it would be very successful. The people of our generation, and even other generations, are extremely attached to electronics. Technology has become more user friendly to everyone. (Blackberry Smartphones and other Smartphones like it allow people to email, and connect to people instantly.)The idea of leaving all electronics behind might not work out for all people.

  19. "No-tech Tuesdays" is a great idea to use because it will remind us of how past generations went through the day without the privilege of technology. This will teach us how to become more social and interact with each other without the usage of electronics.

Although, since we've had technology for so long and that its advancing everyday, I think that we would have a difficult time trying to go without a day without electronics. I could probably go a day without my mp3 player and computers but I don't think i can go a full 24 hours without my cell phone. Leaving the house without my sell phone is hard because I can't keep in contact with my mom or anyone else in case of an emergency.

  20. I definitely wouldn't be able to go without electronics for a day. Internet, yes. Phone, yes. But no TV, or computer, or ebook reader? No.

Although it would be difficult, I also don't think its a bad idea. It's sad how reliant the world of today has become on technology and if enough things went down, the crisis would be enormous. But we must also take into account how muc the world has imporved and is advancing through technology. Still its probably a good aidea to try.

  21. wow . that article seemed to really show the students how much they depend on electronics. i myself probably would be able to go a little longer without electronics but only because i dont really use them a lot.im also not really dependent on them as much but i do think this was a good article.

  22. Technology is a double-edged sword. Sure it improves the speed over both short and long distances.. but this constant reliance on technology is truly damaging our social skills. Phone conversations have been replaced with instant text messages and text messages. Down time is spent on our phones, like Assistant Head of School John Rigney, who said, “my BlackBerry is not just a technological device, but also something I fidget with often … just to pass the time.” Instead of doing something worthwhile, we confine ourselves to the clicks and taps on our phones. What is this world coming to? I must admit, I love my laptop, but since my mom took my iPhone over this weekend, I must give myself a pat on the back, I am not having any iPhone withdrawals.. Just a tad bit sad when I can't check my email without a computer. :(
